Good Evening my Sweetlings,
For the past few weeks I've been getting steadily more and more engrossed in the website The Numinous which describes itself as a place where modern spirituality, New Age and fashion come together. My favorite articles to read on the site are their interviews entitled My Mystical Life in which they interview lots of wonderful people with questions about their lives. Actually I love reading interviews with pretty much anybody, it gives such a great insight into how each person lives and thinks.
I've enjoyed reading each interview on the site so much and the questions were so fun and different. Typically the questions are largely the same for each person, with a few variations thrown in depending on what each interviewee does. I decided it might be fun to have a go at answering some of the questions myself, and sharing my answers with you.
WHAT IS YOUR MORNING AWAKENING RITUAL?
I tend to wake up very early in the morning and I've really grown to treasure the quiet hours I have to myself as the day dawns. I like to go and make myself a cup of tea and then settle down in bed with my crochet hook and work on a new piece, or practice my knitting. I've just recently learned how to do the Purl stitch without making it too tight and I'm really proud of myself! I also spend a lot of this quiet time reading, the side of my bed has so many books piled up that sometimes I kind of have to jump over them to get in. Sometimes I eat breakfast at the same time, which is something of a guilty pleasure because after studying Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine theory I've learned that you're not really supposed to eat and read at the same time!
DO YOU HAVE ANY RECURRING DREAMS AND WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY MEAN?
Strangely I have a lot of dreams about people being sick. I find this odd because I've had emetophobia since I was a little girl and people being sick is still a real fear that I need to work on, yet in my dreams I'm very rarely upset or scared of it. I've read that when you dream of being sick it can signify needing to get rid of something you no longer need, or something harmful, and I've noticed I do tend to dream about it more when I'm going through a big positive change. I also tend to dream about crying a lot, usually myself but sometimes others, which I'm not sure what to make of yet.
WHAT MANTRA DO YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH IN THE MORNING?
It changes from day to day as I've renamed each of the alarms on my phone with different mantras, a practice I believe I got from Contessa Create. One of my favorites is taken from the 'You Can Heal Your Life' book by Louise Hay, which is:
"Today is a wonderful day, I choose to make it so."
I first started using it on days when I had work to help me with my nervousness, and I noticed that as soon as I started using it my work days would go much more smoothly and calmly and I had more confidence.
WHAT’S YOUR LUCKY CHARM?
I have an elephant charm that I was given one day by a traveling lady who did a spontaneous reading for myself and one of my dear friends when we were out for lunch one day. I was amazed that out of everything she could have given me, she gave me an elephant. I've been drawn to the Hindu god Ganesha for a few years and have lots of statues of him on my altar and around my house, I particularly resonate with his role as the Destroyer of Obstacles. Being given that little silver elephant by a total stranger gave me the strongest feeling of being exactly where I'm supposed to be, doing exactly what I need to be doing. It reminded me to keep going, even when faced with what feels like an impossible mountain. The charm lives in my purse and is always with me.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU MOST EMBODY THE TRAITS OF YOUR SIGN?
My Sun sign is Capricorn and I think I definitely embody quite a few of the traits of the sign. For one I would say I'm a very ambitious person, and extremely driven. Capricorns are known for having 'tunnel vision' and are able to shut out everything except the thing they're focused on which is definitely something I feel I'm good at. Capricorns are also often said to be very good at business and with money, and I used to dismiss this but the older I get the truer it becomes. I've always been self-employed, save for the weekend job I have at the moment, and I enjoy thinking about my businesses a lot, devising new ideas and plans for growth.
I'm also a very hard worker, which is characteristic of Capricorns. I put a lot of effort into the things I do, I do my best, and I expect the same of anybody I work with. I find it difficult to deal with people who don't put effort into what they do, and I work on the lesson of learning to be more forgiving and accepting each day.
WHAT OTHER ELEMENTS OF YOUR CHART DO YOU RELATE TO THE MOST?
I relate a lot to my Moon Sign and my Rising Sign. My Moon is in Aries and it fits me to an absolute T! I am passionate, lively, full of emotion and nearly always raring to go. When I get excited I can talk for England, and I have about a million ideas for new things to try, all the time. I also tend to flit about between different ideas of things to do, and I always want to be doing something new. I relate to Virgo especially in how I come across to others in that a lot of people describe me as coming across as shy and quiet when they first meet me. One of the traits of Virgos is perfectionism, and I think I often put this across in the way that other people see me, sometimes as a mask. I can get frustrated when people don't realize that I do struggle with things and I'm still learning a lot of things, but at the same time I think I use this as a bit of a shield to protect the sensitive areas I do have.
WHO IS YOUR GO-TO GURU, AND WHY DOES THEIR WORK RESONATE WITH YOU?
Although I haven't read one of her books in a while, the person who sprang immediately to mind with this question was Lynn V. Andrews. I was introduced to her books on Shamanism a few years ago by my best friend and I love them. They have taught me so much and really got me interested in learning more about Shamanism and in particular Shamanic healing.
My favorite thing about Lynn is that she is very down to Earth. Her books are written along her journey, and you really feel as though you're learning alongside her. You see her grow and change so much, and her writing is so raw, personal and honest, I really admire that.
AND THE HEALER YOU HAVE ON SPEED-DIAL?
Two people fit the bill on this one. First off is my best friend and soul sister Steffie, and the second is my Mum. Interestingly I don't think either of these people would describe themselves as 'healers' if you asked them, but I definitely consider them to be such.
I met Steff a few years ago when she emailed me to ask if I wanted to attend 3 Wishes Faery Festival with her. Up until then we had never spoken, I knew her only as a magical blogger who was loved by everybody I knew, who was awesome at knitting and who had a beautiful singing voice. I was totally and completely starstruck by that first email! Our adventures together always include long hours spent in a car, days spent in Glastonbury in a hotel full of more angels than you could shake a stick at and inpromptu journeys to magical forests and dark nights full of whispering and laughter.
It is impossible to put into words everything I love about Steff, or how much I love her. She is otherworldly, and yet so wonderfully earthy at the same time. She is pure magic and light, and it flows off her everywhere she goes. She is unlimited and she has taught me to break the boundaries that I held onto so tightly before we met. When I need to be challenged she does it in the most loving, understanding way. When I am hurt she knows it, and heals me without my even realizing it. She loves life and believes in how wonderful it is to be here as well as believing that you can do, be and have whatever you ask for. We live across the world from each other, see each other a few times a year and sometimes go months without catching one another, but it always feels as though she is right beside me.
My mum's healing comes from her optimism, her sassiness and her matter-of-fact nature. She is fierce and almost totally unruffleable, completely herself at all times, loving, caring and kind and a total badass. Her nickname at work is 'The Bulldog', she demands the best that everybody can give, but she also accepts and loves people for exactly who they are in that moment.
If I'm ever having a moment of doubting myself she is the person I call to set me straight, and even if I'm in 100% meltdown mode she can fix everything in about 10 minutes. She is my biggest cheerleader and believes in and supports everything I have ever wanted to do, apart from ice-skating (thank you mum, good call!)
My mum, dad and Nana instilled in me the work ethic of doing my absolute best, giving my all, and then being truly happy with the result, whatever it may be. They have also always encouraged me to be myself and to follow my dreams and my heart.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOUR MYSTICAL BELIEFS INFORM YOUR WORK?
Working as a Holistic Therapist I think my mystical beliefs are the basis of my work. They are the basis of how I live and everything I do, and one of my favorite things about what I do is that I get to share my life with my clients and learn about their lives as part of their healing. I have always been a storyteller, and I also love to listen to others stories. I love to know people.
My passion and openness towards alternative healing has been with me since I was young, as has my drive for learning and expansion. I have always been taught that there is more to the world than meets the eye, and that you can use energy to help people. I've carried those teachings with me for as long as I can remember, and I feel they've done me great service and will continue to do so.
I think my love of exploration of different ideas and spiritual approaches also makes me a more open, compassionate and accepting person in my work. I love encouraging my clients to explore as much as I love doing it myself, and I love hearing about their experiences. A lot of people have told me that they see me as a totally accepting person, and I'm always so humbled to hear that because I feel very strongly about acceptance and not judging, both others and ourselves. I feel that a lot of people aren't listened to very much by those around them, and even less so by themselves, so a large part of what I do is just listen to people telling me their stories. When somebody realizes that they are being truly heard, exactly as they are, something wonderful happens in their face, you can see it dawn on them that somebody cares about them, somebody accepts them right now, no changes necessary.
AND HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH NEGATIVE THOUGHTS?
My favourite way to deal with negative thoughts is to sing. I put on music that is full of energy and then sing along with it with the most power I can muster and it always helps. I feel as though you're really changing your energy when you sing, and you're also allowing yourself to release all of the energy you don't want, changing it into something positive and powerful.
At the moment I either put on Fleetwood Mac, Disney songs or The Smiths. The Smiths are particularly great if you're feeling grumpy or angry because they have some excellent angry lyrics that are the best mixture of emotion and ridiculousness. It is also really easy to make up your own songs in their style, because their lyrics are so strange and silly, try it! I once made up a song about a pigeon on a train platform to the tune of 'This Charming Man' and made everybody laugh, it was great.
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BEAUTIFUL, WHY?
Just the fact that I'm alive, I'm always very aware that I could easily not be. Sometimes I look in the mirror at my face and think about how strange it is that I'm here in a body, and that it's a body that I like, it's a body that has flaws, but it is mine totally and completely and I love it.
YOUR LAST CONVERSATION WITH THE UNIVERSE WENT SOMETHING LIKE…?
"Wow, stars are beautiful. Isn't it amazing how big space is, and sort of scary? I wish for happiness, abundance, prosperity. Things are going so great today! Also I really like this ham."
WHAT’S ON YOUR VISION BOARD RIGHT NOW?
I don't have one at the moment, but I do like to collect inspiring pictures on my computer. This is one of my favorites!
YOUR MISSION IN YOUR CURRENT EARTHLING INCARNATION IS…?
To learn, to grow, to heal and lots of other things I haven't remembered yet!
